So many of the people I work with come in saying some version of the same thing. They're tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix. Their digestion feels off, their mood is flat, they've put on weight that won't budge, or they just don't feel like themselves anymore. They went to their doctor, got bloodwork done, and were told everything looks normal. And yet nothing feels normal.
That space between "your labs are fine" and "I still feel awful" is what functional medicine pays attention to.
Functional medicine isn't really a set of treatments. It's a way of asking questions. Instead of starting with a diagnosis and matching it to a prescription, it starts somewhere else: why is this happening in the first place? It looks at the body as one connected system, where your gut, your hormones, your immune function, your stress response, and your energy are all talking to each other constantly. When one of those goes sideways, it tends to show up somewhere else, often in a place that seems unrelated.
The goal is to find and address the root of the problem, not just quiet the symptom sitting on top of it.
This gets set up as a rivalry, and it really isn't. Conventional Western medicine is remarkable at what it's built for. If you break a bone, have an infection, need surgery, or are facing an acute emergency, that is exactly where you want to be. It's organized around identifying a specific disease and treating it, often one specialty and one body part at a time, and it saves lives every single day.
Functional medicine is built for a different kind of problem. It's better suited to the slow, murky, whole-body stuff that doesn't fit neatly into one diagnosis. Where standard care might see a lab value that falls inside the "normal" range and move on, a functional lens asks whether normal for the population is actually optimal for you, and what your body is trying to say through the pattern of it all. Conventional care is trained to spot disease. Functional work watches for dysfunction, the smaller imbalances that leave you feeling unwell long before anything has a name. You need both. They just answer different questions.
Here is where it gets concrete. Functional lab testing goes beyond the standard panels most of us are used to. Rather than checking a handful of markers to rule out disease, it looks at how your systems are actually functioning together: your hormones and adrenal rhythm, your gut and how well you're digesting and absorbing, your immune and inflammation signals, how your body is clearing what it needs to clear, and how you're producing energy at the cellular level.
I think of it like being a health detective. Instead of chasing one symptom at a time, you gather all the evidence and start connecting dots that, on their own, didn't seem related. That congested feeling, the afternoon energy crash, the bloating, the poor sleep. Seen together, through the right testing, they often point to a common source. And once you can see the actual pattern, the changes you make stop being generic guesses and start being specific to you.
If any of this resonates with you, I want to point you toward something happening in our community this weekend. A colleague of mine, Barbara Barrett, is teaching a workshop at the Myotech Wellness Studio, just outside Dedham square, the same space where I teach Yomassage and lead a few of our community groups, and I think a lot of you would get something out of it.
Barbara is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and health coach who found her way to this work through her own experience. She spent years in a design career before her own health struggles sent her looking for real answers, and now she helps people become their own best health advocates. Her work comes from a similar place to how I approach nutrition and coaching, and she takes it a step further with functional lab testing, which isn't part of my own practice.
The workshop is called The Simple Secrets to Renewed Energy, and it's a good place to start if you're curious but not sure where to begin. Barbara will walk through the hidden stressors that quietly wear on your hormones, immunity, digestion, detox, and energy, including how something like a congested liver can send ripples through the whole body. She'll also get into functional lab testing, and how the right panels can point to what's actually driving your symptoms instead of leaving you to guess. Then she'll share the DRESS framework she uses with clients, Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress reduction, and Supplementation, along with a few things you can start doing right away.
Saturday, September 26, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. $15. At the Myotech Wellness Studio, just outside Dedham square.

Come with your questions. This kind of work sits alongside the care you already get from your doctor, and an hour with Barbara might be the thing that finally helps a few of those dots connect. If it speaks to you, go grab a spot, and tell her I sent you.
